Recipe - Woven Necklace - Time: 1 Afternoon

Ingredients

  • Necklace
  • Cotton Twine
  • Loom
  • Faux Leather
  • Beads
  • Needle

You Will Also Need:

  • Scissors
  • Masking Tape
Step 1

1. Create Your Warp

To begin your woven necklace, wind the twine around the cardboard loom, slipping it through the slits on the top and bottom of the loom and taping each end of twine to the back. The vertical twine is called your “warp”.

Step 2

2. Create Weft With Leather

Begin weaving with the leather by going under the first string, over the second string, etc. The horizontal string is called your “weft”. When you get to the end of the first row turn the leather and repeat the weaving process on the next row. Create 3 rows of leather, pushing the rows tightly together.

Step 3

3. Create Weft With Remaining Twine

Thread the needle with the remaining string. Tie a knot so that the weft string is securely knotted on the warp string below the 3 rows of leather. Continue the weaving technique of going “over, under, over, under”. Create 3 rows of string, pushing the rows tightly together.

Step 4

4. Add in Beads

Begin the next row. Thread a bead through the needle and onto the weft string. Continue finishing the row. Add additional beads wherever you want as you continue to weave.

Step 5

5. Tie Off Weft

When you have reached your desired length tie a knot to secure the weft string onto the end warp string.

Step 6

6. Secure the End of the Weave

Cut the warp strings on the back of the loom. Tape the top of the weave to the loom to keep it in place and then pair the warp strings at the bottom together and knot them to secure the end of the weave.

Step 7

7. Secure the Top of the Weave

Tape the bottom of the weave to the loom to keep it in place, and carefully untape the top. Pair the top warp strings together and knot them to secure the top of the weave.

8. Attach to Bar

At the top, separate the strands above the knot and tightly knot them around the metal bar. Untape the bottom.

9. Weave in Extra Strings

Turn the weave over. Use your needle to thread each end of the top warp strings down through 2 rows on the back of the weave & secure them in place, one at a time. Trim the ends once they have been secured.

10. Trim and Enjoy

Trim the bottom warp strings of the weave to your desired length and wear your necklace! Use this same weaving technique to make more necklaces, or expand to a rug or wall hanging.
