Recipe - Pom Pom Stocking - Time: 1 Afternoon

  • Stocking Pieces
  • Pom Pom Trim
  • Large White Pom Pom
  • Small White Pom Pom
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Thread
  • White Lace

You Will Also Need:

  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine
Step 1

1. Preparing the Stocking

To begin, determine the stocking front by deciding which way the stocking toes should point when displayed. (Tip: there is not a definitive right or wrong side to felt fabric.) Once the front has been determined, cut a length of the lace trim to the width of the top of the stocking, Pin the lace to the BACK side of the stocking front along the edge and stitch to the felt.

Step 2

2. Creating the Pom Pom Trim Pattern

Fold the top of the stocking down 2" and pin in place. Next, lay out the pom pom trim design and pin it in place. Tip: make sure there is not a pom pom ball on the edge of the felt fabric–shift right or left to keep off the edge.

Step 3

3. Stitching on the Pom Pom Trim

Stitch trims to the stocking front. Stitch all trims with white thread or use thread that matches the trim colors. When stitching, be sure to sew slowly and pull trim slightly to keep it straight. When finished, cut off any extra lengths.

Step 4

4. Pinning the Stocking Together

Pin the back stocking felt piece to your front stocking design. Start with matching up the toes and pin up to the top of the stocking. When you get to the area with the pom pom trims, be sure to push them out of the line of where the stitch will be. Fold the top of the back stocking piece towards the pins to match up with the front.

Step 5

5. Creating the Hanging Loop

Cut a 6" length of lace. Fold it in half and pin it between the layers of your stocking on the top edge of
the stocking. This will create a convenient loop to hang your stocking from and a place to attach the provided pom poms.

Step 6

6. Stitching the Stocking

Using a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch around the entire stocking. Once you have it stitched, cut the threads and turn right side out.

Step 7

7. Attaching the Large Pom Poms

Start with the small pom pom and tie around one side of the lace loop. Pull the knot tight and secure it by making a double knot. Trim the yarn ends. Attach the large pom pom by tying around the opposite side of the lace loop. Leave about 2" of the yarn length before tying the knot so it will hang longer than the smaller pom pom. Tie a double knot. Trim any extra lengths.

step 8

8. Finishing the Stocking

Turn the stocking inside out. Using the provided needle and thread, whip-stitch the inside cuff to the back of the stocking. Simply catch the felt underneath each stitch and move diagonally to the opposite side of the stocking.

Step 9

9. Enjoy

Turn right side out again. Fill your stocking with goodies and gifts and enjoy the holidays!
